Bitter Melon - Natural Remedies for Diabetes

7:17:00 AM
General Description
The bitter melon or bitter gourd is the bitterest of all vegetables known to humankind, but it is also the most medicinally effective. Though bitter, its fruit is eaten as a vegetable and is used to make several mouthwatering dishes especially in India. In India, the bitter gourd is known as the karela. Its biological name is Momordica charantia.

Morphologically, the bitter melon is an herbaceous vine which bears tendrils and it creeps along supports. Leaves are simple and alternate, and flowers are yellow. Male and female flowers grow on separate plants. The fruit of the plant, which is known as the bitter melon, has an oblong shape with a warty exterior and is dark green in color.

Bitter melon possesses various chemicals such as charantin, peptides resembling insulin and several alkaloids. Due to these constituents, bitter melon is quite widely used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Regular use of bitter melon over a period of time helps to bring the blood sugar level down.

A Coffee Diet-I've Heard It All Now

8:05:00 AM
A coffee diet! I've heard the lot now. The next thing you know we'll be having something like 'loose 10 pounds in 7 days with tea and biscuits!' I mean, who comes up with these fat blasting ideas? Or more importantly, who buys into them? You can just imagine it in the staffroom at your workplace. Everyone fighting to get their Cornish pasty in the microwave and there's you quietly preparing your lunch with nothing but a kettle. Okay, ribbing aside, I guess we should look at this diet in a little more detail and see what method is behind this seeming madness.
The article, which was in a slimming magazine, caught my eye for a couple of reasons. First, because I'm a lover of java, and second, I could do with losing a few pounds myslef, so I couldn't help but read it out of curiosity if nothing else. When I got to thinking about this, I remember my mother always telling to drink a cup of black coffee in the morning as it would curb my appetite until lunch time. And she was right.
Anyway, moving on a tad, the advocates of the coffee diet propose that anyone who wants to shed a bit of weight should do the same as my mother's suggested, although they made no reference to her personally you understand!
However, this weird weight loss approach needs to be looked into a little deeper before we all jump onto the coffee diet bandwagon mouth first. I mean, there's such an abundance of get-thin-quick plans floating around these days, it's best to take a couple of steps back and consider the situation. This goes for any of the new found fads and not just the coffee diet
Before embarking on any new weight loss program, it's always wise to pay a visit to your local doctor first. A complete physical never hurt anyone and your physician will have valuable insight into the coffee diet approach, but somehow I can't see any responsible doc giving the thumbs up to a drinks for food diet. Take the coffee diet to an authorized nutritionist and I bet the response is the same. I could be wrong though and you may find through these two visits that a coffee diet is the probably the right thing for your weight loss needs.
You know, we're always looking for the next lazy, or should I say easy, no, perhaps effortless weight loss program, but despite it all, the old fashion way still wins every time. Can you remember the original diet? It's simply to put less in your mouth and get more exercise. That's it! Okay, so there are a few whistles and bells to add like the right types of food and a sensible exercise regime, but you get the idea.
Another thing worth pointing out with the coffee diet is that it's supposedly a quick fix and not a new way of eating (or starving), so perhaps if the dieter uses it as a jump start to a more sensible eating plan, it's not such a bad thing. It also went on to say in the article that the coffee diet is not the foundation of the program. Now this probably doesn't make a lot of sense, so I'll try to explain. Advocates of the coffee diet strongly urge you to eat well throughout the day. By well, they mean adopt a healthy food diet consuming small portions as part of the regime.
The coffee diet simply allows the dieter a moderate intake of coffee throughout the day time, but the coffee has to be pure. Lattes and cappuccinos and all those other fandangled coffee cups are out. Hmm! it's sounds ok, but at the end of the day, we're still not eating properly because the coffee diet is removing our natural appetite and I'm not totally convinced that's a good thing.
One final point that may give you food for thought is your insulin. Caffeine can make your blood sugar unstable. The insulin in your body will not be able to process it properly and it winds up stored in the body as fat. So, if you do decide to take on the coffee diet, make sure that you don't drink too much.

Do herbs cure diabetes? Yes, but you will need to also use your diet to begin reversing diabetes and eventually cure it. Thousands of people will cure their type 2 diabetes naturally this year but the American Diabetes Association will not recognize a cure.
Unfortunately, pharmaceutical companies do not want you to cure diabetes because you are funding a billion dollar diabetic industry. However, thousands of people will cure this disease and many are using herbs to cure it.
In this article, you will learn some simple herbs to begin your home treatment to reverse diabetes.
How to Reverse Diabetes with Herbal Remedies
So how are the thousands of diabetics curing their disease? Many are using their diet and exercise but many are using herbal remedies. Herbal remedies have been around for centuries but only lately have they been researched to show if they are actually legitimate.
Surprisingly, many experts believe that many common herbs can begin the process to start reversing diabetes.
Here are 4 herbs you may want to start supplementing!
What Herbs Cure Diabetes?
1. Cinnamon has been a very popular remedy for many sufferers. Perhaps the most popular remedy, cinnamon has been shown to help better metabolize glucose and help regulate blood sugar levels.
In one study researching this miracle herb, all participants who were given cinnamon significantly reduced blood glucose, triglycerides, bad cholesterol and overall cholesterol.
You should try to supplement at least 1 gram of cinnamon to your foods and drinks but you can also take a healthy and tasty cinnamon tea.
2. You may also wish to supplement fenugreek seeds to your diet too! A recent study confirmed the seed's role in reducing blood glucose levels and decreasing triglycerides. The seeds have also been shown to increase good cholesterol, also known as HDL. You should be able to find this herb at your local health store.
3. You may also wish to supplement Asian Ginseng which is also called Korean Ginseng. This type of ginseng has been shown to significantly reduce blood glucose levels. 200 mg of ginseng is recommended and should be avoided by pregnant women and kids.
4. Though not a herb, are you taking your fish oil supplement? Many health experts believe that a fish oil supplement is just as important as taking a multi-vitamin. Fish oil has been researched and confirmed to protect you against heart disease. But it has also been shown to help reverse diabetes. The omega-3 fats will even out the blood sugar peaks and valleys. And normalizing blood sugar is the beginning of reversing this disease.

Should Diabetics Drink Coffee?

10:31:00 AM
An extensive survey reported in JAMA (July 6, 2005) showed that drinking coffee reduces risk for developing type II diabetes. However, two recent studies suggest that once you have diabetes, drinking coffee may be unwise.
Canadian researchers writing in Diabetes Care (March 2005) showed that caffeine significantly reduced insulin sensitivity. In the July 2005 issue of the same journal, scientists from Duke University Medical Center reported that drinking coffee could upset a diabetic's ability to metabolize sugar.
Blood sugar levels are supposed to rise after you eat. To keep your blood sugar levels from rising too high, your pancreas releases insulin. The researchers found that taking caffeine causes blood sugar and insulin levels to rise even higher after meals. If your blood sugar rises too high, sugar sticks to cells. Once sugar is stuck on a cell membrane, it cannot be released and is converted to a poison called sorbitol which destroys that cell.
High levels of insulin constrict arteries to cause heart attacks and act directly on the brain to make you hungry, on your liver to make more fat, and on the fat cells in your belly to pick up that fat. If these studies are confirmed, diabetics will be advised to restrict coffee as well as those foods that cause the highest rise in blood sugar after meals.
