Natural Home Remedies for Gout, Herbal Remedy

9:12:00 AM
Causes and Symptoms:
Gout is a disease of the joints and is a form of rheumatism. It is a constitutional disorder connected with excess of uric acid in the blood manifesting itself by inflammation of joints with deposition of urate of soda and also by morbid changes in various important organs.
Hippo crates in his Aphorisms speaks of gout as occurring most commonly in spring and autumn, and mentions the facts that women are less liable to it than men. Why the uric acid is found in excess is not understood by the allopathic physicians. Uric acid is formed in the system in the process of nutrition and is excreted by the kidneys. In a patient suffering from gout, the quantity of uric acid is found to be much more than normal. In a paroxysm of gout, the body appears to get rid of a lot of uric acid and there appears to be some relied but that is purely temporary.
Modern medicine believes gout to be hereditary since it has been found in 50 to 80 percent of the cases that the patient's parents or grand parents suffered from the disease. The disease affects the sedentary persons more than those who lead active lives, but it is not always true. On the other hand, inadequate exercise, a luxurious manner of living, habitual over-indulgence in rich foods and especially in alcohol is the precipitating factors in the onset of the disease. Some teetotalers and vegetarians are also found to be victims of gout.
The disease is more common in mature age and in the males than females. Persons exposed to the influence of lead poisoning such as plumbers, are apt to suffer from gout. Attacks of the disease are readily excited by exposure to cold, disorders of indigestion, fatigue and injuries to particular joints.
An attack of gout may appear without warning, or there may be premonitory symptoms. Among the most common of these are disorders of the digestive organs, with a feeble and capricious appetite, flatulence, uneasiness in the right side in the region of the liver, and irritation in the urinary organs. There is also irritability, numbness and coldness in the limbs. The attack comes usually at night, usually between two and three in the morning. The affected part is found to be swollen and a deep red hue. The skin is tense and glistening and the surrounding veins are more or less distended. The attack lasts for a week or ten days during which the patient suffers from constipation, dyspepsia and extreme thirst. The urine is scanty and high coloured with a copious deposit, consisting chiefly of urates. The joint affected may become swollen but if the disease is not attended to, the swelling spreads to other joints and it becomes chronic. Joints also become enlarged and refuse to function without giving excruciating pain to the sufferer.
Naturopathy believes that like all other diseases, gout is the result of inadequate excretion of the morbid and poisonous matter from the orifices of the body. The bowels, the urinary tract, the skin and the nostrils---all must expel the waste matter from the body. If they become slack and do not function properly, those substances accumulate in the body and produce gout. Life depends on healthy blood and nature has devised catarrh, diahrroea and fevers to force the human system to expel the accumulated waste matter. If these diseases are suppressed, as happens in most case when the patient takes to allopathic treatment, the poisonous and morbid matter attacks the part of the body, which is weaker than others. That is how chronic diseases are born.
The real culprit is the type of food, which we are addicted to. Our blood is chiefly alkaline and anything that tends to produce acidity should be avoided. Treating gout in any other system is chaotic. The real cause of the disease is not attack and recourse is taken to painkillers or antidoting of the poison is under taken. The Ayurvedic practitioners prohibit the intake of fruits and vegetables on the plea that they may produce cold, which is supposed to be bad for the gout and thus deprive the patient of the real cure. Doctors have some times advised patients to have their teeth or tonsils extracted under the misconception that the seat of the disease lays there. But even the excision of these has never led to any relief to the gout patients.
Treatment:
To real treatment of gout starts with ensuring that all the orifices of the body, which expel waste and morbid matter, are activated to do their work properly. The patient should breathe fresh air, so that oxygen is available to him in larger quantities cleansing his blood of poisonous humours. The gout patient must increase his intake of water to produce more urine. He should take lukewarm water in the morning and evening mixed with the juice of mine. The pores of the skin should be activated by a cold bath every day and drying of the body with vigorous rubbing with the palms of the hand. If the pain in the joints is too severe and the patient is unable to massage his body himself, he should seek somebody else's help. Sun bathing should be undertaken to produce sweat. The head may be covered with a wet towel to save it from excessive heat of the sun. Spending half an hour in the sun will activate the sweat glands. A cold bath is recommended after a sunbath; if the patient does not feel equal to it, he would be better advised to wipe his body with a wet towel. Sun bathing should be done no more than thrice in a week. If there is no sun, sweat should be induced by a steam bath or by merely soaking one's feet in hot water.
The food should consist of fresh fruits and vegetables-substances, which do not stick to the intestines. Fruits, which can be taken without peeling, should be taken. In the beginning of the treatment, the best course would be to live on fruit juices. That would give some rest to the intestines. Fruits recommended are: oranges, grape fruit, pineapple, raspberry and pear. Vegetables like the various gourds, cabbage, tomatoes and greens are the best. The more chronic the disease, the greater should be the period for which the patient should live on fruits and vegetables.
After a five-day period during which only fruits and vegetables are taken, milk should be added to the diet. It should preferably be boiled and taken in quantities of 250 to 500 millilitres at one time. Bread should be taken only after a fortnight of living on fruits and vegetables. Potatoes can replace bread with advantages as they contain more alkaline matter.
Hot fomentation should be undertaken to reduce the pain in the joints. About 75 grammes of salt should be added to one litre of hot water for fomentation. The site of fomentation should be washed with cold water later on. Those who suffer from a constant pain should apply a paste of raw potatoes ground fine on the affected joints. The paste should be allowed to remain for some hours.

Eight Tips for Managing Pain

12:48:00 AM
Perhaps the hardest part of having arthritis or a related condition is the pain that usually accompanies it. Managing and understanding that pain, and the impact it has on one's life, is a big issue with most arthritis sufferers. The first step in managing arthritis pain is knowing which type of arthritis or condition you have, because that will help determine your treatment. Before learning different management techniques, however, it's important to understand some concepts about pain.
No. 1: Not All Pain is Alike
Just as there are different types of arthritis, there are also different types of pain. Even your own pain may vary from day to day.
No. 2: The Purpose of Pain
Pain is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong, or that you need to act. If you touch a hot stove, pain signals from your brain tell you to pull your hand away. This type of pain helps protect you. Chronic, long-lasting pain, like the kind that accompanies arthritis, is different. While it tells you that something is wrong, it often isn't as easy to relieve.
No. 3: Causes of Pain
Arthritis pain is caused by several factors, such as (1) Inflammation, the process that causes the redness and swelling in your joints; (2) Damage to joint tissues, which results from the disease process or from stress, injury or pressure on the joints; (3) Fatigue resulting from the disease process, which can make pain worse and more difficult to bear; and (4) Depression or stress, which results from limited movement or no longer doing activities you enjoy.
No. 4: Pain Factors
Things such as stress, anxiety, depression or simply "overdoing it" can make pain worse. This often leads to a decrease in physical activity, causing further anxiety and depression, resulting in a downward spiral of ever-increasing pain.
No. 5: Different Reactions to Pain
People react differently to pain. Mentally, you can get caught in a cycle of pain, stress and depression, often resulting from the inability to perform certain functions, which makes managing pain and arthritis seem more difficult. Physically, pain increases the sensitivity of your nervous system and the severity of your arthritis. Emotional and social factors include your fears and anxieties about pain, previous experiences with pain, energy level, attitude about your condition and the way people around you react to pain.
No. 6: Managing Your Pain
Arthritis may limit some of the things you can do, but it doesn't have to control your life. One way to reduce your pain is to build your life around wellness, not pain or sickness. This means taking positive action. Your mind plays an important role in how you feel pain and respond to illness.
Many people with arthritis have found that by learning and practicing pain management skills, they can reduce their pain. Thinking of pain as a signal to take positive action rather than an ordeal you have to endure can help you learn to manage your pain. You can counteract the downward spiral of pain by practicing relaxation techniques, regular massage, hot and cold packs, moderate exercise, and keeping a positive mental outlook. And humor always has a cathartic effect.
No. 7: Don't focus on pain.
The amount of time you spend thinking about pain has a lot to do with how much discomfort you feel. People who dwell on their pain usually say their pain is worse than those who don't dwell on it. One way to take your mind off pain is to distract yourself from pain. Focus on something outside your body, perhaps a hobby or something of personal interest, to take your mind off your discomfort.
No. 8: Think positively.
What we say to ourselves often determines what we do and how we look at life. A positive outlook will get you feeling better about yourself, and help to take your mind off your pain. Conversely, a negative outlook sends messages to yourself that often lead to increased pain, or at least the feeling that the pain is worse. So, "in with the good, and out with the bad."
Reinforce your positive attitude by rewarding yourself each time you think about or do something positive. Take more time for yourself. Talk to your doctor about additional ways to manage pain.

Pain on Top of the Foot

7:03:00 AM
The purpose of this article is to give you information seekers an easier way to diagnose your pain on the top of the foot. I have noticed that many people use "top of foot pain" as their "search" term.

I have listed the more common problems that we foot specialists see on a regular basis, but this list is not all inclusive. Pain can occur with or without a history of trauma. Sometimes repetitive action (or microtrauma as I like to call it) can create pain on top of the foot.

Hopefully this will help you in your search for answers.

TENDONITIS- Diffuse pain on top of the foot which may also include swelling and even redness. There may or may not be a history of trauma.

GANGLION CYST- A spongy to firm lump on top of the foot that may or may not be freely moveable. The lump itself may not be painful on pressure, but pressing on it may cause pain beneath it.

MIDTARSAL FAULT- In people whose feet have a tendency to collapse (fallen arches), there ends up being a jamming of the bones on top of your foot that will lead to pain, with or without shoes. Generally, there will be no history of trauma.

NERVE ENTRAPMENT- There are small nerves running from the ankle down to the toes that are located right under the skin. These are sensory nerves (which give us feeling on the top of the foot). It is not uncommon for these nerves to become traumatized from the pressure of a shoe (mainly tied too tight) putting pressure on the nerve which is then "jammed" into a bony projection underneath it. This nerve is then entrapped and it becomes inflamed and thus painful or in some cases there will be numbness on part of the top of the foot.

STRESS FRACTURE- Without any history of trauma, a person can develop severe pain on the top of the foot usually in the metatarsal area. It will be a localized pain, possibly with some swelling and perhaps redness.

BONE SPUR- A bone spur in the foot is usually a result of arthritic changes in the foot, bone will overgrow and produce abnormal protrusions on top of the foot. Either damage to the specific joint or pressure from your shoe on the overgrowth of bone (bone spur) will cause pain.

SUPERFICIAL PHLEBITIS- Many of the veins on the top of the foot are directly underneath the skin. Since the foot is subject to trauma every step you take, at times the nerves will become inflamed and develop a superficial phlebitis. This is not as dangerous as a deep vein phlebitis seen in the leg, but medical care is warranted.

Arthritis Pain Relief with Acupuncture

5:59:00 AM
Arthritis pain has never been easy to treat and arthritis symptoms have often been managed by the use of possibly toxic or unpalatable arthritis medication. Acupuncture can result in powerful arthritis pain relief and it can provide an alternative arthritis remedy for many pain sufferers. Arthritis treatment by acupuncture is described below.
Arthritis pain relief with acupuncture - what is acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been used for arthritis pain relief in traditional Chinese medicine for many thousands of years. It has recently become a widely used technique in western medicine – both by doctors and others.
Acupuncture claims good results in the treatment of arthritis pain. Arthritis pain relief and joint pain relief are among the most common reasons for using acupuncture in Western countries. Many people who suffer from osteoathritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, degenerative arthritis and gout seek pain relief from acupuncture – either alongside, or instead of, their arthritis medication or other arthritis treatment.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into several points around the body. These acupuncture points are often near to the site of your arthritis pain and may be very tender to touch before the needle is inserted. Other acupuncture points used for arthritis pain relief may be quite a way distant from the affected joint – acupuncturists usually call these areas “distal points.” It depends on the particular style of practice used by your acupuncturists but you should expect to have anything between two and twenty needles inserted each time you go for treatment
Most arthritis pain sufferers need from three to six treatment sessions before they begin to get relief.
The needles are extremely fine – not much wider than a human hair – and are often left in your skin for more than twenty minutes during a treatment session.
There is no way to predict how much arthritis pain relief you will get from acupuncture – it really is a matter of try it and see what happens.
How is acupuncture used in arthritis pain relief?
Your first acupuncture session may last about an hour and subsequent appointments are often shorter in length. From two to twenty very thin needles are put in place and left there for several minutes. Having needles stuck in your body may not sound like fun but most people say there's only a slight stinging sensation as the needles enter, and no pain at all after that. Your therapist may stimulate the needles by turning or rotating them quickly during your treatment session.
Acupuncture needles are very thin and solid with a smooth point and having them inserted may not be as uncomfortable as getting an immunisation having blood taken for a blood test. The number of sessions needed varies. Long-standing and complex chronic pain problems like arthritis might need one or two treatments a week for several months.
Most people do not experience side effects from acupuncture therapy but a few of us can have problems such as bleeding or infection. Some people who have never experienced acupuncture may feel dizzy after their first acupuncture treatment.
If you suffer from arthritis then do consider trying acupuncture – it may provide the arthritis pain relief that you have been longing for.

However, there are many who do not wish to risk the side effects and drug interactions that can result from this type of pain management. To avoid these risks, many people choose arthritis home remedies as a natural alternative to medications. There are many different home remedies for the treatment of arthritis pain.
Some common home remedies for overall health include:

Foot Pain Relief At Last!

10:05:00 AM
"As an arthritis specialist, one area that I see people complain about more often than almost any other, is their feet." So says Dr. Nathan Wei, Clinical Director of The Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center of Maryland. "This is too bad because there are many treatments that can be helpful," Dr. Wei adds.
The foot is made up of 26 bones and 39 muscles...
The foot and ankle are designed to bear weight. The multiple joints in the feet are capable of adjusting to almost any terrain and the padding in the feet are designed to absorb shock.. The ankle joint allows the foot to move up and down, side to side, and inward and outward (inversion and eversion).
Not All Foot Pain Comes From The Foot!
Careful examination of the low back, hip, and knee should be performed because pain from these areas may affect the foot and ankle. In particular, pinched nerves in the low back can cause foot pain and weakness.
Ankle sprains are common- 25,000 people sprain an ankle every day!
The goal of treatment is to relieve pain and prevent instability.
Treatment of an acute sprain consists of rest, ice compression and elevation ("RICE"). Exercises to help stabilize and strengthen the ankle should be started.
Arthritis of the ankle may cause recurrent pain and swelling.
Pain from arthritis typically is made worse by weight-bearing particularly on uneven ground. What this means is you should try to avoid excessive walking or running on uneven ground. Anti-inflammatory medication and proper foot support can do wonders.
Pain in the ball of the foot has many causes...
  • Foot strain occurs when a person "overdoes it." And the treatment is pretty straightforward. Rest.
  • Morton's neuroma (a benign nerve tumor usually located between the 3rd and 4th toes)
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome (pinched nerve in the ankle)
  • Arthritis.
Other common causes of foot pain include:
  • Stress fractures may occur after excessive walking.
  • Achilles tendonitis causes pain in the back of the heel. Treatment consists of anti-inflammatory medicines, rest, a heel lift, and gentle stretching.
  • Plantar fasciitis causes pain in the bottom of the heel. Treatment includes rest, anti-inflammatory medication, heel cup, orthotics, stretching, and local steroid injection.
  • Flat foot.
Muscle strengthening exercises and orthotics are helpful.
Two other common problems are:

  • Osteoarthritis, particularly common in the big toe. The big toe will point out to the side. When bursitis alongside the great toe joint develops, this condition is referred to as a bunion. Treatment involves proper padding and footwear. In extreme cases, surgery is required.
  • Neuropathy. This painful condition is particularly common in diabetics. This occurs when the small nerves in the feet are damaged. Symptoms include burning, tingling, and pain in the feet - worse at night.
Well fitted orthotics (arch supports) can alleviate not only foot and ankle pain but pain in the knees, hips, low back, and neck!!
We often take the ability to walk for granted. This ability involves the use of two engineering marvels- our feet and ankles. Because of the tremendous amount of force transmitted to the feet with walking, unique problems may develop. Attention to proper preventative care, i.e., comfortable shoes, sox, hygiene, support, along with proper prompt medical care can really put the brakes on foot pain.

Arthritis Sufferers and Mobility Scooters

8:13:00 PM
It is estimated that around 10 million people in the UK today suffer from some form of Arthritis.
Arthritis is a group of conditions that can effect people of all ages, and commonly causes joint pain, inflammation and stiffness.
Some sufferers experience inflammation of the joints, coupled with restricted movement leading to weakness and muscle wasting.
