How Can Goiter be Cured?

1:31:00 PM
Goitre is the swelling of thyroid gland and appears on the back a person's neck. Medical Research suggests that women are more prone to Goitre than men. The common cause of Goitre is deficiency of iodine in the diet. Iodine in its organic form is required by the thyroid gland in its secretion.

Take Iodine in its organic form. Eat foods like turnips, carrots, garlic, pineapples, whole rice, tomatoes, watercress, strawberries, guavas; lettuce, onions, oats, citrus fruits, egg yolks, seafoods, etc should be taken in ample amounts.

Goiters of all types will regress with treatment of the underlying condition. Dietary iodine may be all that is needed. However, if an iodine deficient thyroid that has grown in size to accommodate its deficiency is suddenly supplied an adequate amount of iodine, it could suddenly make large amounts of thyroxin and cause a thyroid storm, the equivalent of racing your car motor at top speed. Hyperthyroidism can be treated with medications, therapeutic doses of radioactive iodine, or surgical reduction. Surgery is much less common now than it used to be because of progress in drugs and radiotherapy.

Radioactive iodine. In some cases, radioactive iodine is used to treat an overactive thyroid gland. The radioactive iodine is taken orally and reaches your thyroid gland through your bloodstream, destroying thyroid cells. The treatment results in diminished size of the goiter but eventually may also cause an underactive thyroid gland. Hormone replacement with the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine then becomes necessary, usually for life.

The best treatment for a goiter is a subtotal thyroidectomy. This is an operation in which most of the thyroid gland is removed. There are some research studies suggesting that putting a patient on a thyroid hormone pill everyday may help to shrink goiters or keep them from growing. However, there are other studies suggesting that this may not work. There are also studies suggesting that even a mild overdose of thyroid hormone, if taken for many years, can result in osteoporosis and may put older individuals at risk for abnormal heart rhythms.

A physical examination usually reveals redness and swelling of blood vessels in the conjunctiva. The doctor may take a specimen of conjunctival scrapings to determine if the conjunctivitis is bacterial, viral or caused by other sources, such as allergies or chemicals.

Make a smooth paste using little water and watercress seeds and apply it on the goiter swelling. Watercress is an excellent source if iodine and when taken internally will also help reduce goiter symptoms.

Goitre, also known, as bronchocele is a term applied to the swelling on the front of the neck caused by the enlargement of the thyroid gland. It is caused by deficiency of iodine in the diet. It is an endemic disease prevalent in the hill districts of the country. The growth of the thyroid gland is generally unattended by pain but if the goiter becomes large it may cause hoarseness. Too enlarged a goiter interferes with breathing and capacity to swallow.

Another best way to get rid of thyroid malfunctioning is go for fasting. Keep yourself on fruits and vegetable juices. After couple of weeks, start with light but nutritious diet. Some of the Ayurvedic herbs like 'Kanchanar' have been used in Ayurvedic science since years to treat thyroid related problems. For this, one can go for its leaves or can take any patent medicines containing the herb. It is also used as a natural cure for goiter.By

Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

7:11:00 AM
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is a group of hereditary disorders that affect the nerves in the extremities. Symptoms typically appear in adolescence or early adulthood, and include weakness in the legs, ankles and feet; loss of muscle bulk; high foot arches; curled toes; decreased ability to run; foot drop; awkward gait; frequent falls; and numbness and pain in the legs and feet.
The Ayurvedic treatment of this condition is aimed at treating the symptoms and repairing the damage to the nerves supplying the extremities. Medicines like Tapyadi-Loh, Kaishor-Guggulu, Trayodashang-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Sinhanaad-Guggulu, Ekang-Veer-Ras, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras, Maha-Rasnadi-Guggulu and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani are used to treat the nerve damage, muscular weakness and decreased sensation of the affected extremities. Herbal medicines which can be used for this purpose include Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Shallaki (Boswellia serrata), Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Tagar (Valeriana wallichii), Vishwa (Zinziber officinalis), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Erandmool (Ricinus communis), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shalparni (Desmodium gangeticum) and Prushnaparni (Uraria picta).
Medicated oils like Mahanarayan oil, Vishgarbha oil, Bala oil, Mahamash oil and Chandan-Bala-Laxadi oil are applied on the affected parts. This is followed by localized steam fomentation using medicines like Nirgundi-Qadha and Dashmool-Qadha. Specialized Panchkarma procedures like 'Pizichil' and 'Shashtikshali-Pindsweda' are also useful in improving muscular bulk and strength in the affected extremities. In Pizichil, a continuous, warm drip of medicated oil is maintained on the affected part, along with mild massage. In Shashtikshali-Pindsweda, cloth-packets containing rice and Bala (Sida cordifolia), cooked in milk, are gently rubbed over the affected muscles.
Early initiation of treatment is important to prevent atrophy of muscle and permanent deformities of the feet. Regular exercise, physiotherapy and care of the feet are important aspects in the management of this condition.

Aplastic Anemia - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

11:24:00 PM
Aplastic anemia is a syndrome of bone marrow failure resulting in very less production of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Immune dysfunction is believed to play an important role in causing this condition. While 20% of the causes are inherited, nearly 80% of the causes are acquired and consist of unknown factors, infectious diseases, toxic exposure and drug reactions. Severe anemia, bleeding, fever and infections are common presentations of this condition.
Ayurvedic treatment of aplastic anemia is basically directed at treating the immune dysfunction and improving normal bone marrow production. Immuno-modulatory herbal medicines like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Nagbala (Sida humilis), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) are used.
Medicines like Arogya Vardhini, Punarnavadi Mandur, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Laxadi Guggulu, Laghu- Malini-Vasant, Madhu-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Heerak Bhasma and Abhrak Bhasma are used to stimulate the bone marrow function. In addition, medicines which act on the "Rakta" and "Majja" dhatus (tissues) of the body are also used, as these again act on the metabolism regulating bone marrow production. These medicines include Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Guduchi and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis).
Aplastic anemia is a serious medical condition and can have a potentially fatal outcome. Blood transfusion, bone marrow transplant and immuno-suppressive therapy have radically transformed the survival outlook in this condition. Ayurvedic medicines may be used as additional therapy to reduce severity, prevent infections and improve the overall survival rate of affected individuals. All treatment should be done under the care and supervision of an experienced hematologist.

Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

10:09:00 AM
Central serous retinopathy (CSR), also known as central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), is a disease of the eye and retina, which affects vision. CSR is known to be closely related to stress, gastritis (H. pylori bacteria), kidney disease, and the use of medications like steroids. This condition usually affects males from the age of 20 to 50 years; however, females too may be affected. This condition results from leakage of choroidal fluid due to breaks in the retinal pigment epithelium, resulting in a swelling beneath the retina which accumulates under the central macula. This causes blurred or distorted vision, known as metamorphopsia. Retinal detachment may cause a blurred or grey spot in the central visual fluid.
Modern treatment of CSR consists of removing the known cause of the condition, discontinuing steroids, and providing counselling and psychotherapy for stress. No medication is known to provide benefit in the treatment of this condition; however, some physicians are of the opinion that mild dose aspirin may help in early recovery. Some patients report benefit with a short course of steroids; however, this treatment is controversial and possibly may cause a relapse or aggravation of the condition in the long run. Hot laser treatment, or cold laser is known to provide benefit by plugging the leakage in the retinal epithelium; however, care needs to be taken in the implementation of this treatment in order to prevent damage to the retina and long-term scarring.
The overall prognosis of this condition is usually quite good, with more than 90% patients reporting improvement within the first six months. However, about 5% of patients may have rapidly deteriorating vision due to a condition known as Type II CSR, in which there is a shallow but persistent fluid build-up. A few patients may report recurrence of the condition, resulting in progressive loss of vision. Scarring may cause persistent problems such as decreased night vision, reduced color discrimination and distorted vision.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment is especially useful in patients with recurrent CSR and in those patients with little or no response to modern medications or laser therapy. The aim of treatment is to prevent leakage of fluid by strengthening the basement retinal pigment epithelium and helping to resolve the fluid accumulation, so that retinal detachment can be treated or prevented. Treatment is also aimed at reducing stress and preventing strain of the internal parts of the eye.
Medicines like Saptamrut Loh, Tapyadi Loh, Ekangveer Ras, Trayodashang Guggulu, Maha Triphala Ghrut, Maha Manjishthadi Qadha, Saarivadi Vati,: Punanava Mandur, Lakshadi Guggulu, and Rasayan Ghan Vati are especially useful in the management of this condition. Herbal medicines which are useful in the treatment of CSR include Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Triphala (Three fruits), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Yashtimadhuk (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha ( Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus) and Kutki (Picrorrhiza Kurroa).
Medicines like Praval Panchamrut, Sutshekhar Ras and Kamdudha Ras are used to treat associated gastritis. Gokshuradi Guggulu, Chandraprabha Vati, and Punarnavadi Qadha are used to treat associated chronic kidney inflammation. Medicines like Saraswatharishta, Prasham, Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) and Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) are used to treat associated stress along with counseling.
Oral medications like Triphala Ghrut, Yashtimadhuk Ghrut, Shatavari Ghrut, and eye drops containing Triphala, Yashtimadhuk, and rose water can be used on a long-term basis to prevent relapse of the condition. Most individuals affected with chronic or recurrent CSR require Ayurvedic herbal treatment for about three to six months. Regular treatment can provide complete relief to individuals affected with this condition, as well as prevent a relapse and long-term complications. This treatment can also be given concurrently with modern therapy like laser treatment. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a definite role to play in the management and treatment of CSR.

Filariasis (Elephantiasis) - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

7:01:00 AM
Filarial parasites cause skin lesions in a condition known as filariasis or elephantiasis, and affect the lives of millions of people, especially those living in tropical countries. The spread of this disease is usually through mosquito bites. Symptoms involve a swelling and thickening of the skin and lymph glands, which can in some cases be considerable. Skin lesions usually persist for a long time. The acute infection usually causes nocturnal fever and local tenderness. Chronic lesions are usually painless.
The Ayurvedic treatment of filariasis is aimed at controlling the infection and treating the symptoms of this disease. The herbal medicines, Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) and Kachnaar (Bauhinia variegate), are considered to be the main stay of treatment for this disease. Medicines like Nityanand-Ras, Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Arogya-Vardhini, Triphala-Guggulu and Punarnavadi-Guggulu need to be given in high doses for prolonged periods in order to reduce the swelling and thickening of the skin lesions. Medicines like Sukshma-Triphala, Gandhak-Rasayan, Mahamanjishthadi-Qadha, Chandraprabha-Vati and Trivang-Bhasma are used to treat the basic parasitic infection responsible for this disease. Patients who do not respond satisfactorily to these medicines can be given additional medicines like Ras-Sindur, Malla-Sindur, Sameer-Pannag-Ras, Ras-Manikya and Abhrak-Bhasma. In order to reduce swelling, medicines like Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Gomutra-Haritaki, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Dashmool-Qadha, Ikshumool (Saceharum officinarum), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Apamarga (Achyranthus aspera) and Sahinjan (Moringa pterygosperma) are used.
Local applications on the skin lesions are also quite helpful to reduce swelling and thickening of the skin. Ointments containing Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Ras-Sindur and Gandhak (Purified sulphur) are used for this purpose. Traditional herbal formulations like Dashang-Lep and Shoth-Har-Lep can also be used for this purpose. Blood-letting from the affected lesions with the application of leeches is also helpful in reducing symptoms.
Filariasis has a wide range of clinical manifestations in different tropical regions ranging from mild to very severe forms of the disease. Appropriate modifications in treatment need to be made according to the presentation of symptoms.

Pleural Effusion - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

8:22:00 PM
Pleural effusion is an abnormal accumulation of fluids in the pleural space between the parietal and visceral pleura of the lungs. Breathlessness, chest pain and non-productive cough are the most common symptoms associated with pleural effusion. This condition is most commonly caused by congestive heart failure, pneumonia, malignancy or pulmonary embolism. Removal of the fluid in the pleural effusion by thoracentesis acts as a diagnostic procedure and also serves as a therapeutic modality.
The Ayurvedic treatment of pleural effusion is aimed at reducing the accumulation of fluid within the pleura and treating the known cause. Congestive heart failure is treated using medicines like Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Shrung-Bhasma, Maha-Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Arjunarishta, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani, Arjun (Terminalia arjuna), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) and Abhrak-Bhasma. Pneumonia can be treated using medicines like Shrung-Bhasma, Ras-Sindur, Malla-Sindur, Sameer-Pannag-Ras, Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Bruhat-Kantakari, Karkatashrungi (Pistichia integerima), Kushtha (Saussarea lappa), Kulingan (Alpimia galangal) and Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa).
Pleural effusions due to malignancy can be treated using medicines like Kachnaar-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivadi-Churna, Heerak-Bhasma, Laghu-Malini-Vasant, Madhu-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Sameer-Pannag-Ras, Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Bala (Sida cordifolia) and Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum).
A massive pulmonary embolism is usually an acute medical emergency and needs to be treated in the intensive care of a hospital. However, repeated, minor pulmonary emboli can be treated using medicines like Triphala (Three fruits), Trikatu (Three pungent herbs), Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Vishwa (Zinziber officinalis), Kutaj-Parpati and Panchamrut-Parpati.
The prognosis of pleural effusion varies and depends on the cause and characteristics of the effusion. Patients who seek medical care earlier in the course of the disease and those with prompt diagnosis and treatment have a substantially lower rate of complications than those who do not. All such patients should be under the regular care and supervision of a chest physician.
