Goitre is the swelling of thyroid gland and appears on the back a
person's neck. Medical Research suggests that women are more prone to
Goitre than men. The common cause of Goitre is deficiency of iodine in the diet. Iodine in its organic form is required by the thyroid gland in its secretion.
Take Iodine in its organic form. Eat foods like turnips, carrots,
garlic, pineapples, whole rice, tomatoes, watercress, strawberries,
guavas; lettuce, onions, oats, citrus fruits, egg yolks, seafoods, etc should be taken in ample amounts.
Goiters of all types will regress with treatment of
the underlying condition. Dietary iodine may be all that is needed.
However, if an iodine deficient thyroid that has grown in size to
accommodate its deficiency is suddenly supplied an adequate amount of
iodine, it could suddenly make large amounts of thyroxin and cause a
thyroid storm, the equivalent of racing your car motor at top speed.
Hyperthyroidism can be treated with medications, therapeutic doses of
radioactive iodine, or surgical reduction. Surgery is much less common
now than it used to be because of progress in drugs and radiotherapy.
Radioactive iodine. In some cases, radioactive iodine is used to treat
an overactive thyroid gland. The radioactive iodine is taken orally and
reaches your thyroid gland through your bloodstream, destroying thyroid
cells. The treatment results in diminished size of the goiter but
eventually may also cause an underactive thyroid gland. Hormone
replacement with the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine then
becomes necessary, usually for life.

Home Remedies To Control Cholesterol
10:40:00 AM
Cholesterol is one of the body's fats. Cholesterol levels in the blood
rise slightly with age, and women generally have a higher
HDL-cholesterol level than men. Cholesterol is also found in the blood
circulation of humans. Cholesterol is naturally present in cell walls or
membranes everywhere in the body, including the brain, nerves, muscles,
skin, liver, intestines, and heart. Having too much cholesterol in the
blood is not a disease in itself, but can lead to the hardening and
narrowing of the arteries in the major vascular systems. When the
cholesterol level is measured in a blood sample, the levels of all forms
of cholesterol can be calculated. The cholesterol in a person's blood
originates from two major sources; dietary intake and liver production.
Dietary cholesterol comes mainly from meat, poultry, fish, and dairy
products. High cholesterol is the best known of all the many threats to a
healthy heart. High cholesterol can cause the formation and
accumulation of plaque deposits in the arteries. A person's lifestyle,
including inactivity, obesity and eating a high-fat diet, can contribute
to high levels of total cholesterol.
People who smoke and also have high cholesterol are at even greater risk
for heart disease. Food cholesterol comes exclusively from animal
products: meat, eggs, milk products, butter, etc. Most people wrongly
believe that the cholesterol contained in food is responsible for their
high cholesterol levels. Lipid disorders are more common in men than
women. Excess cholesterol in the bloodstream can be harmful and lead to a
condition in which fat and cholesterol
are deposited in the walls of the arteries. It is currently recommended
that your total cholesterol level be less than 200mg/dl. A healthy
diet, regular exercise and other lifestyle changes can go a long way
toward reducing high cholesterol. Sometimes medication is needed, too.
Statins block a substance the liver needs to make cholesterol. This
depletes cholesterol in the liver cells, which causes the liver cells to
remove cholesterol from the blood.
Prevention of High Cholesterol
• Eating a diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol may help prevent high cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
• Quitting smoking and exercising may raise levels of “good” HDL cholesterol.
• Maintaining a healthy weight - or losing weight, if necessary - can help prevent lipid abnormalities.
• Eliminate the use of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.
Home Remedies for High Cholesterol
• Garlic is a wonder drug for heart. Clinical trials have shown that
fresh garlic and garlic supplements may lower cholesterol levels,
prevent blood clots, and destroy plaque.
• Arjuna is a coronary vasodilator. It protects the heart, strengthens
circulation, and helps to maintain the tone and health of the heart
muscle.
• Ginger reduces cholesterol and thins the blood improving circulation.
• Shudh Shilajit was found to lower serum cholesterol, liver
cholesterol, serum triglycerides and serum phospholipids in test
subjects feed high cholesterol diet.
• Sunflower seeds are extremely beneficial, as they contain linoleic
acid that helps in reducing the cholesterol deposits on the walls of
arteries. You just need to modify your cooking style a bit and
substitute sunflower seeds for solid fats such as butter and cream.
• Incorporate loads of fiber in your meals, as fiber helps a great deal in lowering the cholesterol pressure in blood.By: Peter Sams

Asthma Cure - Herbs and Ayurvedic Remedies, Asthma Home Remedy
12:09:00 PM
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder in which the inner lining of
the respiratory tract becomes inflamed. Alternatively it could be
blocked with a layer of mucus or could become constricted due to some
other reason. All these factors could lead to severe problems in
respiration, which could even result in death of the person.
Though asthma is a chronic disorder, it does not manifest itself all the time. It is exacerbated by certain triggers, which can lead to the bouts of respiratory problems, known as asthmatic attacks. During an asthmatic attack, there is severe difficulty in breathing, characterized by wheezing, gasping, shortness of breath and inability of speech. Generally an attack does not last more than a few minutes. However, a severe attack could kill within those few moments the attack lasts.
The exact cause of asthma is not known. But in asthmatic people, the attacks are caused due to some environmental factors to which they are allergic. There are many allergenic factors in the environment such as dust, hair, pollen, lint, smoke, cigarette smoke, perfumes, deodorants and many others. When such an allergen is present in the environment of the person whose respiratory tract is inflamed, the person develops a violent reaction. This is known as an asthmatic attack.
Asthma is known as Shwaasa roga in Ayurveda. There are five main types of asthma in Ayurveda: tamaka shwaasa roga, urdhwa shwaasa roga, chinna shwaasa roga, maha shwaasa roga and kshudra shwaasa roga. All these kinds of shwaasa roga are due to vitiation of vata and kapha doshas. The main types of vata that are vitiated are the praana vata and the udaana vata.
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Asthma
- Aniseed (Pimpinella anisum)
Aniseed is useful in the treatment of asthma due to its expectorant properties.
- Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna)
The bark of the arjuna plant has benefits in the treatment of asthma. It is taken in a powder form sprinkled on the preparation of rice and condensed milk known as kheer.
- Asafetida (Ferula fetida)
Along with whooping cough and bronchitis, asafetida is also useful in the treatment of asthma. For better results, its gum is taken in a mixture with honey.
- Bay Berry (Myrica nagi)
Bay berry bark is effective in the treatment of asthma. It can be taken in the form of either a decoction or a powder.
- Bishop's Weed (Trachyspermum ammi)
Bishop's weed is an expectorant. It can relieve dried up phlegm within the respiratory tract. It can be taken with buttermilk for best results.
- Black Nightshade (Solanum nigrum)
Black nightshade can remove the catarrh and phlegm deposited in the bronchial tubes. Its fruits are taken for the remedy.

Ginger is used in treatment of asthma due to its expectorant properties.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Asthma
The following dietary guidelines must be followed in order to reduce asthma:-
- Sour foods such as curd and buttermilk must be avoided.
- Cold fruits such as bananas, guavas, watermelons and papayas are very risky as they can build up phlegm in the bronchial tubes.
- Fried and pungent foods must be avoided.
- Dry grapes are beneficial in asthmatic patients.
(3) Ayurvedic Treatment for Asthma
Sitopaladi choorna is a very common medicine taken by asthmatic patients. It is to be taken thrice or four times a day, mixed with honey. One alternative to sitopaladi choorna is the pippaladi choorna.
Agastya rasayana is another popular medicine which is prepared with Chebulic Myroblan as its main ingredient. Along with Chyavanprasha, it is commonly prescribed to asthmatic patients.
There are some specific Ayurvedic preparations that are prescribed in order to reduce the attacks of asthma immediately. These are Shwasa Kaasa Chintamani rasa, Suwarna Pushpasuga rasa, Kanakasava, etc.
(4) Home Medications
- Mix a couple of leaves of the holy basil with honey and consume them every morning. This is a very effective remedy to keep asthmatic attacks away.
- When an attack is about to come, then chewing on some leaves of the holy basil mixed with rock salt.
- In order to clean the respiratory tract, roast gram and have them with milk just before going to bed.
- Grind some turmeric (use old turmeric for better results). Mix one teaspoonful of this powder with one tablespoonful of honey (again, the honey must be as old as possible). This is to be taken orally. This recipe is believed to work even when all other methods fail.
- For asthma in the early stages, it is beneficial to chew on some black pepper before going to bed.
- For temporary relief from asthmatic attacks, mix some leaves of the holy basil with black pepper and consume them.
- One more remedy is to mix some lemon juice with ginger and consume it once a day.
- Chewing a single fruit of the Chebulic Myroblan (harad) every night will give tremendous relief from asthmatic attacks.
- Boil six cloves in half a cup of water. Take a teaspoonful of this decoction with honey thrice a day.By: :Tom Alter

How To Prevent Strep Throat
1:14:00 PM
Strep Throat
A strep throat is basically an infection of the mucous membranes lining the pharynx. It is caused by bacteria and at times, infects the tonsils as well. Though it can affect anyone, school children are more prone to strep throat. Moreover, people who smoke or live in damp and crowded conditions are also readily infected with strep throat.
How is Strep Throat Transmitted?
Strep Throat is transmitted directly from person to person by coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Very occasionally strep throat is passed through food, when a food handler infected with strep throat accidentally contaminates food by coughing or sneezing.
How Do I Get It?
If someone in your family or at school has strep throat, there is a chance you may get it. Strep throat is spread when healthy people come into contact with people who have it. When a person with strep throat sneezes or blows his or her nose and you are close by, or if you share the same forks, spoons, or straws, the bacteria can spread to you.
Prevent Strep Throat
Strep throat is caused by tiny bacteria found on the throat and skin. You can get strep throat when a sick person sneezes on you, blows his nose nearby, or the two of you share a fork, spoon or straw. To prevent strep throat, here are several precautions you can take.

Treat strep throat with penicillin
Strep throat's most common in children. The main symptoms are ... severe sore throat, "severe" meaning having trouble swallowing and having a lot of redness and mucous discharge in the back of the throat. Often in can be associated with fever and swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck.
When to See a Doctor
If you aren't feeling well, but aren't sure if you need to see a doctor, find the answer here. Look up your symptoms and when you might need to see a doctor for each one.
Viruses cause most sore throats
When viruses infect your nose, throat and sinuses, your body fights back by making mucus. This helps wash out viruses. The mucus from your nose and sinuses drains into your throat. It can make your throat feel sore. Allergies, smoking, and air pollution can also lead to a sore throat.
Natural Home Remedies for Strep Throat
There are many ways of helping the body in dealing with infections. Home remedies for strep throat are various and they include many aspects: diet, natural antiseptics, natural analgesics or natural antibacterial cures. Used appropriately, home remedies for strep throat can speed up the process of healing by fighting bacteria and by stimulating the immune system of the body.
For those not already sick with strep throat, the cold, or the flu, it is most important to talk about how to prevent infection. While taking full advantage of all that the winter wonderland has to offer, keep in mind that frequent washing of your hands can stem the spread of unwanted seasonal guests such as the common cold. Managing Hypertension And Neck Pain
12:08:00 PM
If you have ever felt like your blood was going to boil and you could
just barely rotate your neck, you probably have a condition referred to
as neck pain and hypertension. The catch 22 is that you can feel neck
pain but you can not normally detect high blood pressure without a blood pressure monitoring device.
Blood Pressure
On an average day your heart will beat about 100,000 times to pump 2,000 gallons of blood through your veins and blood vessels. The force of the blood against the inside walls of your vessels, plus your vessels resistance to blood flow, create blood pressure.
It makes sense that the fewer obstacles you have restricting the blood flow, the lower the pressure will be; very similar to what happens when you flush the toilet. Medical experts agree that the normal blood pressure for adults is less than 120/80.
Hypertension
Hypertension can be described and categorized as either essential or secondary. Essential hypertension indicates that no specific medical cause can be found to explain a patient's condition. Secondary hypertension indicates that the high blood pressure is a result of another condition such as kidney disease or certain tumors.

Persistent hypertension is one of the risk factors for strokes, heart attacks, heart failure, and arterial aneurysm and is a leading cause of chronic renal failure. Even a moderate elevation of arterial blood pressure leads to shortened life expectancy.
Treatment
Around 70 million people in the United States suffer from neck pain hypertension, and around one-third of them do not have a clue that they need treatment. By having a physical examination one time a year, any increase in your blood pressure will be recognized and treated, along with your stiff neck.
After it has been established that you are suffering from neck pain hypertension, you and your doctor need to establish a realistic blood pressure goal for yourself just like you would do if you were trying to lose weight.
At this point you should purchase a home blood pressure monitor. By charting your blood pressure on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis, certain trends may jump out at you that will help you attack your stiff neck pain and hypertension.
Medication
For a majority of people who suffer from neck pain and hypertension, making changes in their diet and incorporating daily exercise into their routine makes them healthy again. Those in the minority will require some form of medication.By:Wayne V. Sanches

How Can Goiter be Cured?
1:31:00 PM
The best treatment for a goiter is a subtotal thyroidectomy. This is an
operation in which most of the thyroid gland is removed. There are some
research studies suggesting that putting a patient on a thyroid hormone
pill everyday may help to shrink goiters or keep them from growing.
However, there are other studies suggesting that this may not work.
There are also studies suggesting that even a mild overdose of thyroid
hormone, if taken for many years, can result in osteoporosis and may put
older individuals at risk for abnormal heart rhythms.
A physical examination usually reveals redness and swelling of blood vessels in the conjunctiva. The doctor may take a specimen of conjunctival scrapings to determine if the conjunctivitis is bacterial, viral or caused by other sources, such as allergies or chemicals.
Make a smooth paste using little water and watercress seeds and apply it on the goiter swelling. Watercress is an excellent source if iodine and when taken internally will also help reduce goiter symptoms.
Goitre, also known, as bronchocele is a term applied to the swelling on the front of the neck caused by the enlargement of the thyroid gland. It is caused by deficiency of iodine in the diet. It is an endemic disease prevalent in the hill districts of the country. The growth of the thyroid gland is generally unattended by pain but if the goiter becomes large it may cause hoarseness. Too enlarged a goiter interferes with breathing and capacity to swallow.
Another best way to get rid of thyroid malfunctioning is go for fasting. Keep yourself on fruits and vegetable juices. After couple of weeks, start with light but nutritious diet. Some of the Ayurvedic herbs like 'Kanchanar' have been used in Ayurvedic science since years to treat thyroid related problems. For this, one can go for its leaves or can take any patent medicines containing the herb. It is also used as a natural cure for goiter.By Peter Hutch

Low Sodium Diet - Control Blood Pressure Naturally
12:40:00 PM
The mineral sodium is found in small quantity in almost all the food
items and it is also present in dairy products and meat naturally. It is
found in water and it is also added in many forms to the food products.
Sodium is need by the body to maintain the fluid balance but too much
sodium can cause excess retention of water in body which can have severe
consequences. On an average people take more than 1,500 mgs to 2,500
mgs of sodium per day.
People who do a lot of exercise or eliminate a good amount of sodium from body by exercising and sweating are allowed to take sodium up to 3000 mg per day. A personalized amount of sodium is needed by each individual depending on the body's immunity system and lifestyle. The requirement of sodium for human body is just 69 mg per day and depending on other conditions a high sodium diet raises the risk of a number of diseases such as congestive heart failure, kidney problems, cirrhosis, hypertension, diabetes and Meniere's disease.
A low sodium diet helps in controlling the blood pressure, water build up and swelling. It can also be helpful in reducing breathing problems which is caused as the heart is weakened by certain medical condition.
Some of the common food products which are high in sodium are soy, sauces, salad dressings, baking soda, baking powder, barbecue sauce, garlic salts, onion salt, lemon pepper and meat tenderizers. Meats such as smoked and cured meat which includes ham, bacon, corned beef and sausages are high in salt. Pickled food items are also good source of sodium. One should avoid these food products if one is suffering from health problem caused by high sodium intake and make a diet chart which includes only low sodium products.

A study conducted in 2002 has validated the traditional claims.

Here's what you have to do to get rid of your hair loss forever:
1. Know what is causing your hair loss.
Now, you might say, if I already knew the cause, I would have got rid of in myself. Well, it isn't as hard as you think. Hair falling out is often due to reasons like a sudden major shift in your lifestyle, eating habits, sleeping patterns, or even something that affects you emotionally. The reasons for hair falling out are often not physical, but mental. Check if you have been stressed at work, have been skipping meals, have been sleeping less or otherwise have been mentally uneasy. These are some big factors causing hair fall.

Benefits of Eating Spinach Everyday
10:16:00 AM
Not many of us like the idea of eating spinach daily. But the
fact is that this green leafy vegetable is a powerhouse of nutrients
with very few calories. A cup full of this vegetable fulfills most of
your daily nutrient needs and still has only forty calories to boot. So
why wouldnt you eat it? Some people do not like the taste of it but I
have a cure for you. I mix 3 handfuls in with my fruit smoothie every
morning and you can't even taste it. I bet your kids wouldn't even know
they were eating it.
Eating Spinach daily has many health
advantages and is a strong building block to a healthy body. It has a
high fiber content and a cup full of spinach has enough vitamin A and K
for your daily requirements and enough foliate and manganese to last you
the whole day and if this is not enough, consider its calcium and
protein content too. The high content of vitamin A is great for your
eyesight and it strengthens the eye muscles as well.
Spinach has
proven anti-aging properties as well as anti-carcinogenic properties due
to the high concentration of flavonoid compounds. The anti ageing
properties of eating spinach have been proven time and again.
Researchers have confirmed that the vital compounds present in spinach
are great to keep your brain young and active.
It is a great
vegetable for those with high blood pressure as it helps to keep the
pressure low. It works wonders for the heart as it has compounds, which
prevent the hardening and thickening of arteries. A person who consumes
spinach daily is protecting the body against the onslaught of diseases
like colon cancer, osteoporosis, and arthritis. Also it is very useful
to keep blood sugar levels stable in Diabetics.
It is great food
for growing kids and also menstruating women due to its high iron and
mineral content. Daily consumption of this nutritious leafy vegetable is
a great healthy habit and is very beneficial to maintain good health.
But please be sure to eat organic pesticide free spinach. Organic
spinach has more nutritional value than non organic plus it is better
for the environment.
You can use spinach in salads, toss with any
type of nuts and pressed garlic to make it tastier. A little pressed
garlic stirred into olive oil can also be tried. Spinach can be tossed
into pasta dishes without even cooking it to give your dinner that extra
nutrition that you and your family needs.
All in all Popeye
really did know what he was doing! He was able to build strong lean
muscles by eating a diet consisting of mainly spinach! Argh! Eat your
spinach! By
